Sometimes doing the impossible is just part of the job…

Addie isn’t magical, but she can wield power with the best of them. As a master alchemist, she bottles magic through knowledge and skill. To the magical community, she is just a mundane human who dares to wield a power she doesn’t innately possess. But Addie is used to surprising those who underestimate her.

When an explosion levels the Alchemica, the country’s premier alchemy institute, Addie suspects the magical community. She sets out to prove her suspicions only to discover that it might not have been professional envy that led to the destruction of her home. It might have been the discovery of an alchemical formula. A formula that anyone—magical or not—would kill to possess.

Filled with action, mystery, humor, and romance, The Final Formula Collection includes the first three titles in the series, along with two never before published short stories

The Final Formula (Book 1)
The Element of Death (Book 1.5)
The Blood Alchemist (Book 2)
The Lich’s Lab (Bonus Short Story)
A Christmas Formula (Bonus Short Story)

This is a good series and I've enjoyed it. The books got progressively better as the author developed backstories of the main characters. My only real criticism of her writing involves conversational dialogue. Often, she neglects to identify the speaker. Too often, I had to reread passages trying to determine exactly who said what. Sometimes, even with 2 or 3 rereads, I was still unsure of the speakers. Keeping in mind that most of the characters fall into a paranormal category with complex abilities that always seem to be evolving, this leads to some plot confusion. This weakness detracts greatly from those portions of the plot. I look forward to the next book in the series and can only hope that her conversational dialogue writing skills become more specific.

The Final Formula Collection An Urban Fantasy Boxed Set | Contains Books 1 15 and 2 of the Final Formula Series eBook Becca Andre Reviews

This book 1.5 The Element of Death fills in the gaps the that relate to the happenings of the first book The Final Formula. This story revolves around James, the Grim, the Fire Element Rowan and the dead necromancer Edgar Winters, plus others. The story is excellent in its creepiness of raising dead people, possession of the living all the while blowing up the building!! A short story but another good one by Becca Andre. I just finished Book 2 - The Blood Alchemist and it was amazing. Non stop action with Addie and Rowan leading the way. The necromancers were heavily involved throughout this story as well as the Elements, James the Grim and his Three Idiot Brothers. Twists and turns, who done it, death, sadness, deception, potion making and explosions filled the pages. I can't wait to continue with this series. I highly suggest this series, it is a great read. An excellent read. When I bought the collection for $0.99, I assumed it would be eh, maybe passable. I was more than pleasantly surprised; I was delighted. The characters' relationships are nuanced, the storyline has been well crafted, and really I couldn't put it down.

My first thought is "I'd watch this movie," but I'm afraid that the big screen would ruin the nuanced relationships between the characters in this series. I'm scouring to find more books by Becca Andre, preferably in this world. Thank you, Becca, for refreshing my love of the genre.
If you've read many of my other reviews, you know I give very few five star reviews. This one earned the rating.

I learned about this series through a referral to the author via a different author at the SFF Online Writing Workshop. A roundabout way to find a very interesting urban fantasy series! I'm very glad to've found this. Becca Andre has done a great job of world building to come up w/ a modern-day Cincinnati in which magic flourishes. The amount of magical detail in the stories is just about right for me, though I don't know whether she based her knowledge of the occult on research or whether she made things up. That's a sure sign of good writing.

Like many modern fantasy novels, the plot runs along at a brisk clip with the main character (in this case, a supremely talented Alchemist who suffers from partial amnesia) scrambling from one crisis to the next. While I, personally, prefer a more measured pace, that's only my subjective taste. The important point is that Ms. Andre executed on her chosen form so well that I just had to rank the series at five stars.

With the exception of the trio I have come to call the "Three Psychopathic Stooges," Andre's characters are nuanced. Most possess a mixture of good and bad, strong and weak traits, though she distinguishes between truly bad and mostly good very well. This subtlety lends realism to her characters and makes the "good ones" (and even a few of the less good ones) sympathetic and interesting.

All-in-all, I think this series is more than worth your time!
The Final Formula
Once I started this book, I was hooked. The characters were so well developed that I found myself immediately engaged. Addie is one interesting woman, she is strong and even though she has no memory of her life, before the explosion of her school and home, she continues to move forward with her life. James is her best friend and the brother of the man she works for until things get crazy. Rowan is a crucial part of the story and the tie that binds Addie and James.

This is story of the future where magic has come back and it is set in Ohio. It is full of Elementals, Necromancers, Zombies, Grims, and Alchemists, all the things that make a good story that borders on the believable. You learn, along with Addie, what caused her loss of memory and the story is full of surprises. The ending makes you want to find out more about Addie, James, and especially Rowan.

Element of Death
This was just a short story that follows up from the Final Formula but seen from James’ perspective. A large part of this story shows how Rowan and James became close. What I found to be the most interesting is that James is supposed to not have a soul but everything he does contradicts that (at least in my opinion). Seeing Addie through James’ eyes made her more real. On to the next part of the story, it just gets better and better.

The Blood Alchemist
This story is full of twists and turns. You find yourself totally immersed with the characters and emotionally involved (at least I did). I got to the point that one of the murders hit me so hard, I had to put the book down and get away from it for a bit before I could go back and finish. That is how much this author brought me into her world. It is well worth reading and I am looking forward to reading more of this series.

Poor Addie, she cannot remember what evil she did in her past, but she wants to be a new person. But she keeps ending up sabotaging herself and finding herself in deeper than she wants. As she does that she finds out more about herself then she wants to know. All she wants to protect those she loves, especially James and Rowan but can they forgive her? Will Era forgive her if she ever finds out what Addie did? All of these things, hopefully, will be answered in the upcoming books.
This is a good series and I've enjoyed it. The books got progressively better as the author developed backstories of the main characters. My only real criticism of her writing involves conversational dialogue. Often, she neglects to identify the speaker. Too often, I had to reread passages trying to determine exactly who said what. Keeping in mind that most of the characters fall into a paranormal category with complex abilities that always seem to be evolving, this leads to some plot confusion.
