Third book in the USA Today bestselling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series.
In Bloody Lessons, the third book in the bestselling Victorian San Francisco mystery series, it's the winter of 1880, and the public school teachers of San Francisco are under attack their salaries slashed and their competency and morals questioned in a series of poison pen letters.
Annie Fuller, the reluctant clairvoyant, has been called in to investigate by Nate Dawson, her lawyer beau, and the case becomes personal when they discover that Nate's sister Laura may be one of the teachers being targeted.
In this historical mystery, readers will find the same blend of a cozy mystery and romantic suspense that they found in Locke's Maids of Misfortune and Uneasy Spirits. However, if new to this series, they will still enjoy spending time with the lively residents of Annie Fuller's O'Farrell Street boardinghouse and visiting San Francisco when Golden Gate Park was filled with horse-drawn carriages, politics were controlled by saloon-keepers, and kisses were stolen under gaslight.
Bloody Lessons is followed by Deadly Proof, and Pilfered Promises, and Locke's shorter works, found in Victorian San Francisco Stories and Victorian San Francisco Novellas, feature minor characters from the series.

This was a nice easy read. It dragged a bit at times and I had to put it down for a while. The mystery was easy to solve and I new "who did it" very early in the book. Laura was not likable at the start but she had matured a lot towards the end. Laura jumped to illogical conclusions and Annie and Nate's speculations didn't make a lot of sense. This is the first book I have read of this series and I may have enjoyed it better if I had been more acquainted with the characters. It is a clean story that reflects the morals of the times. No profanity and no descriptive sex scenes. Also, it's not preachy at all. I'll probably get the next book to give the author another chance.

Bloody Lessons A Victorian San Francisco Mystery Book 3 eBook M Louisa Locke Reviews
I read a previously written book by this author and enjoyed it so I thought I'd try another. But...this one was not as enjoyable to me as the other. My likes great historical perspective on life in SF in the late 1800s, good main characters, the pace is slow...much like the times it is conveying (I needed to slow myself down on purpose), and interesting plot. My dislikes waaaaay to involved for me.....so many characters being introduced every chapter, it seemed. I lost track. The story went on and on and on.....and I got impatient. The ending was not easy to spot. I like mysteries that give you enough clues to figures it out yourself.
But, all in all...not bad.
Ms Locke writes so vividly of the period and with such color and nuance that I imagine that I smell the breeze coming up from Fisherman's Wharf. She capture the essence of a young nation healing from a dreadful war. I live not very far from the site of Andersonville Prison and I can tell you her research in its regards is absolutely accurate. A side note here is that the Confederate soldiers Harding the place did not fare much better than their inmates. The books are like a look through time at The Beautiful City by the Bay as she began to rise above her rough and tumble beginnings to become the jewel she is now. Locke also captures the capricious nature of San Francisco's weather that led to Samuel Clemons famous quote, " The coldest winter I ever spent was one summer in San Francisco. " If she continues to write of Annie and Nate I will continue to read them. This is historical fiction at it's best.
San Francisco comes alive in this latest addition to M Louisa Locke's cozy Victorian mystery series. Each book in the series not only provides an entertaining `whodunnit' but also uses social issues of the times to drive the plot such as servants' working conditions (Maids of Misfortune) and spiritualism (Uneasy Spirits). This time the political machinations behind the public education system provides the catalyst for events that lead the ever resourceful Annie Fuller and her fiancé, Nate Dawson, into an investigation to discover the identity of a blackmailer. In addition to this story thread, Locke has introduced Laura Dawson, Nate's sister, who has her own mystery to uncover. The strong willed, ambitious Laura (good heavens, a woman who wants to eschew marriage so she can go to university?) is a welcome addition to the cast of characters as her relationship with a civil war veteran reminds the reader how soon after this conflict Bloody Lessons is set, and highlights the age-old plight of returning soldiers who are expected to transition easily back into civilian life after suffering psychological and physical trauma.
Locke deftly weaves the back story of her other two novels into the book so that it can easily be read `out of order', however, those who have already been introduced to the lively and sociable residents of Annie's boarding house will enjoy learning more about their lives, and indeed, some of their darker secrets.
The romance between Annie and Nate is not without continuing complications despite the fact they are officially courting. The etiquette of the era is well described when it comes to the couple observing `seemly' behaviour but Locke does a nice job of conveying how both Nate and Annie are finding it increasingly harder not to get `hot and bothered' even when they are determined to meet societal standards.
I can highly recommend Bloody Lessons to all those who love historical mysteries where intrigue and romance are entwined with meticulous research, engaging characters and a well-paced plot.
